Exchanging practices and skills in outdoor sound
Following the success of the Launch of the Sound and the Outdoors Programme in 2025, Base Frequencies returned in 2026 as an extended five-day residency.
Like-minded enthusiasts came together for five days of shared exploration, innovation and creativity in this unique opportunity for anyone using sound as a key part of their artistic practice and interested in making work for the outdoors. They had the run of 101 Outdoor Arts’ 20,000sq warehouse creation facility and fabrication workshops where they played and developed their outdoor projects. Exploring and testing work in diverse sites across natural and built environments on the former Greenham Common airbase site.
Spaces on the lab were prioritised for artists that have interesting techniques and project ideas they are looking to develop which engage the public in an outdoor location. The 101 team was also on hand to support with materials, equipment and knowledge.
We welcomed artists working at any point in their career including those thinking about working in the outdoors for the first time.

It was an amazing week alongside some incredible sound artists, many whose work I had seen/heard before. Its focus was sound for the outdoors. 101 has a great, enormous fabrication workshop, full of metal poles, steel plate, everything you would need to make a large (or small) outdoor installation or sound art construction. Martin who is in charge is very experience having worked with many outdoor arts companies, great with suggestions, very kind and gentle, a very safe pair of Hands. Simon Chatterton who runs 101 is probably the world's leading expert on producing large scale outdoor sound events like 'Power Plant' and 'For the Birds' amongst others. Some of the others attendees had created sound pieces for these shows.
2026 Participant
A brilliant week, lovely food, great company, I learnt a lot and witnessed the creation of some highly creative and imaginative pieces, very Heath Robison. We also all played together, creating some magical sounds, favourite part was going on mass to Greenham Common Women's Camp Memorial Gardens to perform a tribute. I walked off by myself at some point and played bells to the traffic on the roundabout next to the garden, it was that kind of week.
I highly recommend to all my sound art friends who may be interested in sound for outdoor spaces, watch out for next year's application!
