In Memoriam, Luke Jerram

Weds 16th Sept – Tues 22nd Sept 2020, Goldwell Park, Newbury

In September 2020, artist Luke Jerram created a poignant installation in Goldwell Park in tribute to those who lost their lives in the COVID 19 pandemic.

Created from bed sheets, a cluster of tall red and white flags stood for seven days, constantly moving and changing with the weather, the red flags forming a giant red cross.

Intended as a place of reflection, the flags represented the resilience and solidarity of our communities as they faced unprecedented times. As well as remembrance to those who lost their lives to COVID 19, the installation paid tribute to all the NHS and careworkers who selflessly worked through the crisis.

Visitors were invited to experience the flags from a distance, or to walk amongst them, and had the option to listen to a specially commissioned track by artists including members of Massive Attack and Portishead as they explored the installation.

Throughout the duration of the In Memoriam installation the Corn Exchange team talked to local residents about their responses to the artwork, capturing some of the poignant reflections for the short film above to be left as a legacy for the community.
