Queering the Arts Outdoors 2027
Queering the Arts Outdoors 2027
Mon 1 - Thu 4 Mar
at 101 Outdoor Arts
A funded 3 day residency programme for LGBTQIA+ artists making work for the outdoors and public space
Queering the Arts Outdoors is a 3 day residency programme for LGBTQIA+ identifying artists & makers interested in developing new work for the outdoors and public space. Throughout the residency artists will work day-to-day developing their project idea with a mix between solo development time, sharing ideas with the other artists and facilitated conversations.
The residency structure and activities will be responsive to the specific cohort of artists and companies attending with a combination of group activities, workshops and invited LGBTQIA+ practitioners to support. Artists can expect to learn more about directing and dramaturgy in public space, methodologies of working with communities and nature with a focus throughout to think more deeply about your project idea.
Queering the Arts Outdoors will be hosted by 101 Outdoor Arts National Centre for Arts in Public Space which hosts a programme of residencies and professional development opportunities for artists working in the outdoors and public space. Accommodation is provided on site as well as technical resources and fabrication facilities available in the workshop.
This residency was designed in response to our Queering the Arts Outdoors Symposium in 2025 with a desire to support LGBTQIA+ artists with space, mentoring, financial support, workshops, and a new network of artists.
Each successful artist or company will receive:
- £800 per artist (inclusive of travel)
- Accommodation and meals
- Production, artistic & producing support
Criteria
We welcome applications from artists who are from underrepresented identity backgrounds. We’re especially interested in artists who are making contemporary and boundary pushing outdoor work that can be presented to general public audiences.
Projects may consciously challenge representations of gender & identify or focus entirely around other themes.
We welcome risk whether that be political risk, a risk in your project's theme or question, art form, or otherwise.
We invite artists who may be developing outdoor work for the first time to apply and, equally companies who have lots of experience making work for the outdoors.
There's no expectation to finish or showcase a project at the end of the residency. The opportunity intends to support artists with care and thoughtfulness, giving you the space the explore and develop without the urgency of a finished outcome.
You tell us what a successful residency might look like for you!
