101 hosted a 4 week afternoon study group, where participants could join the 101 team to watch and discuss Fai-Ar’s MOOC (Mass Open Online Course), exploring the nuts and bolts of creating art for public spaces. Fai-Ar is France’s leading school for outdoor arts creation.
Fai-Ar’s outdoor arts focussed MOOC comprised of weekly online episodes featuring experts in the field, and examples of work from over 100 artists. The study group met at 101 to watch the material online as it was released, and discuss the topics covered, along with taking part in some practical exercises together to explore the content.
“It became a good team building experience. The course gave us an awareness of so many different projects - some we recognised and some we didn't - we had a lot of conversations thinking about the scope of the outdoor arts sector and how things have advanced. We talked about what we see as the future of outdoor arts.”
Tara Williams Projects Officer, 101 Outdoor Arts
The online course covered:
Week 1: Was an introduction to the multi-faceted outdoor arts movement, looking at the history of outdoor arts, the aesthetics, and the institutions that support the work.
Week 2: Looked at dramaturgy in relation to location, and the specific issues around conveying a message outdoors.
Week 3: Covered scenography, location scouting, and in situ writing methodology.
Week 4: Explored different considerations that outdoor artists make about the audience’s relationship with their work.
The sessions were free to attend and were produced by Fai-Ar, which is based at the Cité des arts dans la Rue in Marseille, and In Situ, which is a European partnership of organisations that support art in public spaces. More than 4,967 people have participated in the MOOC so far, with more than 120 countries represented among the participants. 42% in France, and 68% elsewhere. A rerun of the MOOC began on 3rd May 2021.
