Galatea
GALATEA, Emma Franklin
August 2021
Nominated by Wildworks.
Emma Franklin was nominated by Wildworks, using her Seedbed residency to develop a new trans led outdoor adaptation of Galatea, a groundbreaking early modern text, featuring a queer and D/deaf cast.
Introduced to Seedbed through Danielle Corbishley, Emma worked with David Sheppard of Marlborough Productions and a group of 18 production team members and cast, plus 5 BSL interpreters This initial development formed part of a larger development project leading to the planned presentation of a full-scale production of Galatea as part of Brighton Festival in May 2022.
The residency focused on the use of text in outdoor space - experimenting with how the playtext could be delivered using mini-rig audio technology used successfully by Wildworks; song - collaborating with composer Vicky Abbott - and the use of visual mediums taking account that the company will include D/deaf performers.
She also focused on working with D/deaf performers in outdoor space in order to develop an inclusive and clear process for working with a range of D/deaf and hearing performers, working with a D/deaf assistant director.
