SHAPERS

Ex Nihilo

Monday 27th Aug 2018, 2pm

Market Place, Newbury

In Shapers, eight dancers from across the Mediterranean performed inventive and affecting choreography with fearless physicality; the result of a year and a half’s research and training on creating choreography with a true sense of place.

Shapers was the result of an extraordinary collaboration between eight young dancers from across the Mediterranean, hailing from Egypt, France, Spain, and Morocco.

Between April 2016 and September 2018, the dancers visited each location and underwent training where they participated in the creation of a dance piece, questioning their relationship to the city, to locations, to passers-by, and to public space.

The dancers travelled across the Mediterranean region and Europe, challenging their dance in new contexts and developing a relationship with site-specific work over time.

101 also ran an intensive workshop for professional dancers to tie in with this show led by Ex Nihilo.

The Shapers project was co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union 2016 – 2018.

"For 20 years Ex Nihilo has been one of the most exciting outdoor dance companies in Europe. Co-directed by Anne Le Batard and Jean-Antoine Bigot, their choreography is the result of an immersion in place, a journey where bodies explore the very fabric of the city."
