Project VEE & Carousel
PROJECT VEE & CAROUSEL, Southpaw Dance Company, with support from Without Walls
Fri 5th May and Sat 6th May 2016
Market Place, Newbury
In this double bill, juggling sensation Project Vee showed a daring work of danger, skill and unpredictable moments. Then South Paw Dance Company performed Carousel, a dance theatre piece with enigmatic characters dancing on a rotating merry-go-round.
Project_Vee is a nod to a Soviet era circus act, remixed for the 21st century.
Steel, concrete and motors met in an unlikely way as Project_Vee took juggling to a different dimension. Two men juggled clubs while rotating on a large axle.
Dance theatre piece, Carousel had a highly original set: a rotating merry-go-round - and exploited the possibilities of this set to the full, using the platform to flip, roll, dive and spin to an eclectic Gypsy influenced score.
The carousel provided the centre-piece for an edgy story of the enigmatic characters inhabiting a fairground and their loves, rivalries and friendships. Dance theatre was used playfully and poignantly to show the personal tragedies of an intensely close-knit group of people, after their fairground has shut down for the night.
Project_Vee was commissioned by Without Walls, Ageas Salisbury International Arts Festival and Out There, after an original investment by the City of London Festival. Supported using public funding by Arts Council England, and support from the National Centre for Circus Arts, Worthing Theatres and 101 Outdoor Arts Creation Space.
Carousel was developed for Without Walls.
