Internationally-renowned Kamchàtka street theatre company led an intensive residential workshop on performance in public space
Internationally-renowned Kamchàtka street theatre company led an intensive residential workshop based on the tools and theatrical language that the company has been developing and refining over the last 17 years. This opportunity was open to anyone working outdoors/ in public space, in any discipline and at any point in your career - whether you're straight out of training or you've been performing on the street for 20 years!
Originating in Barcelona, Kamchàtka is an artist collective of diverse nationalities and disciplines whose famous interactions featuring a group of newly-arrived strangers carrying suitcases has become emblematic of our times.
Through the workshop, participants learnt Kamchatka’s skills of performance in public space; the body in motion, use of space as part of the dramaturgy, non-verbal language and the interaction and participation of the public. Participants learnt to transform space and generate emotions in order to create unique and powerful artistic experiences. Using playfulness and games the workshops encouraged us to keep all five senses open to everything which surrounds us and accompanies us.

Chloë Smith's Reflection on Kamchatka's BODY, SPACE, INTERACTION Lab
"In July I had the incredible opportunity to participate in the “BODY, SPACE AND INTERACTION” workshop with the internationally- renowned Kamchàtka, a street theatre company from Barcelona. This experience was truly mind-opening. I met the most inspiring people, worked from a different perspective and allowed myself to grow personally and professionally.
"I have to say a huge thank you to choreographer Ruth Jones for letting me apart of “Hidden Cannel” which was how I obtained this experience with Kamchàtka. Also another huge thank you to Walk The Plank Arts and 101 Outdoor Arts for doing what you do and helping artists like me by putting on these amazing workshops and events.
"Lastly, as a performer Kamchàtka have really opened my eyes to performance and how I can bring these new skills and tools into my work to help refine myself as an artist. So thank you so much Cris and Gary at Kamchàtka."
"I've learned so much about the simplicity, the stillness of simplicity, of listening and how effective very little is."
